Item #:501
Description: Checkers: An exacting strategy game where each player has control of one of the two sets of colored pieces, the goal is to capture (checkmate) the opponent's King.
Chess: The leading theory in the history of Chess is that the game originates in India around 600 A.D. before landing in Persia around 700 A.D. The head of the monarch, or ruler of the land, was the Shah. In fact, the term "checkmate" is a play on the Persian phrase "Shah Mat" which means "the King is ambushed".
Checkers: Known as Draughts in British colonies, this popular strategy game involves diagonal movements and jumping over the opponent's pieces in order to capture them.
A board game believed to be related to Checkers was discovered in the ancient city of Ur, Iraq, and dates to about 3000 B.C. As well, the British Museum has specimens of ancient Egyptian checkerboards! But Checkers as we know it today has been around since 1400 B.C.
