The leading theory in the history of Chess is that the game originates in India around 600 A.D. before landing in Persia around 700 A.D. The head of the monarch, or ruler of the land, was the Shah. In fact, the term “checkmate” is a play on the Persian phrase "Shah Mat" which means "the King is ambushed".
